Are we looking for Albuquerque attractions when vacationing in New Mexico? Yes, you can count on us! Jess used to call Albuquerque home, and we've been there several times for various reasons, including Jess's old stomping grounds and the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
You're about to learn that there's a ton to do in Albuquerque, and most of it has nothing to do with the hit AMC series Breaking Bad. Without further ado, here are some of our favorite activities in this stunning New Mexico metropolis.
Activities Available in Albuquerque
Albuquerque has so much fun at any time of year that the activities on this list aren't ranked in any particular order.
Take The Tramway to Sandia Peak
If you've been reading this blog for any length of time, you know that whenever I visit a new city or town, one of my favorite things is to rapidly go to a vantage point where I can take in the breathtaking scenery and establish my bearings.
Sure enough, Albuquerque satisfied my adoration. The Sandia Peak Tramway is the longest in the world, and the view from the peak's observation deck, 10,378 feet above sea level, was breathtaking.
We could see all of Albuquerque below us, and more than that; on a clear day, the vista stretched out over 11,000 square miles! One of the best ways to become acquainted with the city and its environs.
Along the ridgeway, in addition to the tramway and the viewing platform, there are hiking paths, and we walked a half-hour version of one of them, up to Kiwanis Cabin, for even more expansive views.
Visit The Balloon Fiesta and Museum
I have previously gushed on the blog about the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. In conclusion, you should go. See my picture essay for additional convincing evidence, and check out Jess's comprehensive guide to the Balloon Fiesta for all the information you'll need.
The Balloon Fiesta is only briefly held each year, so you may have to wait a year to experience the joy of ballooning. Indeed, nothing could be farther from the truth! The Albuquerque Balloon Museum is the next best thing to see 600 balloons lift off simultaneously into the sky, but it's still quite cool.
We had a great time at the balloon museum, which had incredible information about ballooning's history, development, and current state as a sport.
Stroll Around The Old Town
The historic Old Town Centre of Albuquerque is a must-see while in the city. The oldest structure in the city was constructed in 1706, and now the area known as the "ancient old town" serves as a bustling commercial district and cultural center. There's a lot to see and see here, so give yourself plenty of time to explore.
We recommend checking out the Albuquerque Photographers Gallery, the Rattlesnake Museum, and the Candy Lady's shop. You can also take a guided tour of the historic district of Albuquerque. You may choose from several tours, such as an e-bike tour, a personalized history trip, a tour focusing on gastronomy, or even a tour centered on ghosts!
Go To The Golden Crown Bakery
In Albuquerque, New Mexico, we had a fantastic dining experience. The food in New Mexico is so good that I will dedicate a post to it, which is unusual for me. But there were several more out-there culinary choices that I felt compelled to highlight in this piece.
In the top spot is the Golden Crown Panaderia. As far as we know, this is the only New Mexican bakery in existence, and they are skilled at what they do: making wonderful pastries. There's a free biscochito waiting for you as you come in, and you have to choose between a wide variety of amazing treats. The green chile bread is a must-try!
See The State Fair
The New Mexico State Fair is a major event in the United States, and we were fortunate enough to visit Albuquerque when it was happening. The event typically takes place over 10 days in September; if you can go, you should take it.
There will be amusement park rides, live animals, art exhibitions, and lots of opportunities to spend your hard-earned cash. It's a great time, and if you're an international visitor like me, you'll learn much about American culture.
